The Tearjerkers - Syracuse Summer
Tom Kenny (the voice of Spongebob Squarepants) is a Syracuse native. In the early 80s he was the lead singer of a band called The Tearjerkers. His best friend Bobcat Goldthwait (who once came into Wegman’s when I was working in highschool, try to control your jealousy) was even their roadie.
This song they recorded is called “Syracuse Summer.” I won’t even get into the amount of digging I had to do to find this, but this is definitely the only recording of this song online. I actually like the track. It’s got a Beach Boys vibe, it admits how short Syracuse’s summers lasts, and the line “I got the top down cruising down Erie Boulevard” is hilarious to me.
Apologies to my non Syracuse/Spongebob Squarepants affiliated followers.

19th Century Chinese Kingfisher Feather Tiara, Carnelian
I spent a day out buying in New Jersey, and found this. I didn’t actually know exactly what it was when I bought it— just that it was about the most beautiful thing in all of New Jersey. It turns out that Kingfisher feathers have long been used in Chinese art, especially in hair ornaments and headdresses. And also that the feathers contain the same photonic crystals that blue morpho butterfly wings have, which were used in 1920s English jewelry. The one I found is in far from perfect condition, but I think it would be lovely pinned right onto the wall.

love this house!
I’m always realizing how awesome the sky is when I go home to rural MN.
When you live in a city, it’s easy to forget that we are surrounded by the greatest show in the Universe: The Universe itself. This sky comparison chart is the sad proof of that.
Sadly, missing the awe-inspiring show of all those planets, stars, and galaxies dancing around us is the price humans had to pay for having observed it in the first place:
“When our prehistoric ancestors studied the sky after sunset, they observed that some of the stars were not fixed with respect to the constant pattern of the constellations. Instead, five of them moved, slowly forward across the sky, then backward for a few months, then forward again, as if they couldn’t quite make up their minds. We call them planets, the Greek word for “wanderers.” These planets presented a profound mystery. The earliest explanation was that they were living beings. How else to explain their strange looping behavior. Later they were thought to be gods, and then disembodied astrological influences. But the real solution to this mystery is that the planets are worlds, that the Earth is one of them, and that they all go around the sun according to precise mathematical laws. This discovery has led directly to our modern global civilization.” A Personal Voyage — Harmony of the World, by Carl Sagan
Is that a puppet theater above??!? You know when parents live out their dreams through their children?? Add this to that list. MY KIDS WILL HAVE THIS BED AND I WILL USE IT ALL THE TIME TO READ AND THEY WILL HATE ME. Beginning of the end….
I would like one of these.
